Rambling Thoughts From A Frazzled Mind

By Tom Morrow

AMERICA's FINEST? -- What must the rest of the nation (world for that matter) think of "America's Finest City?" With a mayor who apparently can't keep his hands to himself and temper his potty-mouth, the citizens of our fair city to the south have to be embarrassed. It's enough to make even the most liberal of Democrats blush. (The Dems are currently divided on what they think of "hiz onorous." You can sure bet the farm that if the San Diego mayor was a Republican, the unions and progressives would make sure he was chased out of town on the first train heading north.

WHAT A GAS -- On the last trip (2003) I made Down Under, I discovered Australia has an over abundance of natural gas -- almost as much as we have in this country. The difference is the Aussies use their gas to power their cars and trucks, and that's only about 10 percent of their supply -- the rest is exported for a hefty fee to resource poor Japan. Every Aussie gas station has a natural gas pump alongside of Regular and Ethyl. A station attendant told me that government regulations require 50 percent of all vehicles manufactured in Australia be equipped to burn natural gas.
We also have great quantities of natural gas, so much so that if our cars were equipped to run on it, our air would be cleaner and we wouldn't have to be dependent on foreign oil. In fact, we could sell some of it and put some money in our cash-poor treasury. The problem is a lack of willingness on the government to require manufacturers to equip vehicles to burn natural gas and enough refueling stations to meet that demand.
With the current $4 per gallon gasoline prices, maybe its time for the United States to enter the 20th century now that the rest of the world has left it.
Alas, all of this probably makes too much sense for this country to adopt such measures.
